AN INTERESTING EXPERIMENT.
Adelaide, Nov. 20. Mr Eallis, of the Werocata Station, is making some interesting experiments with Shropshire sheep with a view to bettering their worth for mutton purposes. A lot of 50 Shropshire wethers, which are being sent to England alive, selected from the flock lambed in June, 1894, and the best of the selection turned the scale at 170lbs, and the worst at 3321b live weight, The whole fifty is calculated to average close upon lOOlbs. The sheep were entirely fed ®n grass, and no extra care taken with them. Ten from the same flock were sold in the Adelaide market and brought from 8s to 9s each, while the best price obtained for merino wethers was 6s 6d, It is claimed that the experimenthas proved that Shropshire crossbreds give maturity in 18 months, while it takes three years to mature merinos for mutton purposes.
