STANDARD MORALITY,
The affairs of A. B. Worthington, guide, philosopher, and friend of the Christchurch Students of Truth, are being freely discussed in the Cathedral City. According to the Star, a meeting of persons who sympathise with the action of the Sun newspaper with reference to Mr A. B. Worthington was held in Hobbs’ Buildings on Monday night. The Rev, W. Birch was in the chair, and the room wes crowded. The. chairman, in opening tbo meeting, referred to tbo conduct of the plaintiff in the libel action since coming to Christchurch, and slated that the main object of the meeting was to provide means for the editor of the Sun to carry on the case. All who did not sympathise with this object were requested to leave the room, and two men left, It was proposed by Mr Bendeloy, seconded by a lady and carried unanimously, “ That tins meeting approves of the action of the Sim newspaper in cndeavoininr to force Mr A. B. Worthington to justify his position as a teacher of morals and religion in this city.” The Chairman announced an annonymous donation of £2 its to the defence fund, air Hornsby said that ho had, daring a long experience, always supported the weaker side. Wealthy papers had said exactly what ho had said in the Sun and no libel action bad followed. Ho an nounred that evidence would be taken in New York, and that of Sister Magdala would bo taken here. It was necessary for the good of the community that the mutter should be sifted. It was for this purpose, and not for the more purpose of aiding him personally, that the as imince of the people was required. The Rev. W, Birch was elected In asnrcr.
