A NEW MOTOR.
The Hon Evelyn Ellis performed iecently what is said to be the first journey on a petroleum motor carriage in this country. The carriage, known as the Daimler, is one built by Messrs Panbard and Lcvassor, of Paris, and the patent rights for the Eluted Kingdom and the colonies are held by the Daimler Motor Syndicate. It consists of a neat and compact four-wheeled dog cart, with ac co/mnodaiion for four persons and two portmanteaux. It can travel at a speed of from fifteen to twenty miles an hour, though the average is fixed, rather, at from eight to twelve, and the cost of the petroleum consumed is about one halfpenny an hour. There is said to be no smoke, heat, or smell, while the carriage runs quite smoothly and without any oscillation. > Steering apparatus is provided, and the brake power allows of a stoppage within a distance of about a yard. The journey performed by Mr Ellis was from Hampshire to Datchet, the distance of thirty-six miles being covered in five hours and a half, Mr Ellis was accompanied by Mr Ere ierick R. Simms, the managing director of the syndicate.— Times, July ’oth.
