Further results are Derby, Primrose, Conservative, and Drage, a Conservative, were returned, defeating Sir Win. Y. Harcourt, late Chancellor of the Exchequer by 890 and 28‘s respectively. For Perth, Wallace, a Liberal, was returned by a majority of 372. The Barrow election resulted in the favour of Mr Charles W. Cayzer, late member, by 800. Darlington returned Mr A. Pearre, Unionist, by a majority of 657, the seat having been held in last Parliament by a Liberal. For Chatham, Mr Davies, Conservative, was returned by 483. Manchester, North-West, Sir William Houldsworth, Conservative, was returned by a majority of 1400. Manchester, East, Hon A. J. Balfour defeated Professor Joseph E. C. Mudro, Liberal, by 776. Manchester, Sout-West, Mr Galloway, Conservative, was returned by a majority of 490.
Manchester, North East, Sir James Fergusson was returned by 200. Manchester South, Lord Lome, Conseivative, won by 780. Manchester, North, Mr Charles E. Sowann, Liberal, was re-elected by 455. Grantham, Mr H. Y. Buller, Lope', Conservative, was re-elected by 340. Salford, North, Mr Higgins, Comer- \ rative, was elected by a majority of 6. ( Lincoln, Selby, a Conservative, was elected by 200. Saliford, South, Sir H. H. Ho worth j was re-elected by 74. 1 Saliford, West, Mr Lees Knowles was re-elected by 100. 1 Stockport, Messrs Geo. J Johnston, Tories, and Arnold Porter, Unionist, all for Belfast Baldwin, Tory, Bewdley More, Unionist, Ludlow Colonel Kenyon, Stanley, Tory, New-* j port | Hudson, Tory. Hiichin Sir F. Hunt, Tory, Marylebone St John Broderick, Guilford The following have also been returned: —Sir E. Northcote, Exeter; Daly, Parnellite, Limerick The Unionists have gained Darlington, Stockport, Manchester, S.W., Salford North. Ihe Liberals gain Perth. The results of the election so far are : Liberals 10; Conservatives, ( JG; Parnell - ites, 4; Unionists, 76. The last-mentioned have gained at least eight, while they have lost one seat. Lord Hopetoun has been appointdd Paymaster General and member of the Privy Council, and Earl Coventry, Master of the Buckbounds. Lord Eosebery explains that Baronetcies conferred on Messrs S. J, Destern, M.P, for Stowmarket. a division of Suffolk, and Jas. Williamson, M.P. for Lancaster, a division of Lancashire, were in fulfilment of a promise made by Mr Gladstone, Mr Balfour declared that Manchester had covered itself with glory. The Tories had won a victory there which would echo through the country. Sir W. Harcourt admitted that he could not conceal the magnitude of the surpris-r ing ’defeat. Mr Primrose, who headed the poll, is and old resident of Derby, and an employer of labour. Sir W. Y, Harcourt and his wife were pelted with cabbages and filth while chiving through Derby. Mr Primrose was secretary to the Labour Commission. It is reported that the Government has obtained the consent of a member of Royalty to reside in Ireland. Colonel Saunderson, speaking at Longball. said the Government intended to abolish the post of Lord Lieutenant of Ireland and establish a Koyal resident in the country.
