THE PATTI KISS.
Madame Patti appeared in “La Traviata ” at the opening of the Royal Italian Opera on a recent Saturday. The groat priraa donna lias returned from America with her matchless voice in excellent order. Like most artists who visit the United States, she has uquired a certain demonstrativeness of style, and in the scene of parting with her lover, she fairly astonished staid opera goers with the specimen of the embrace which across the water fairly rivals “ the Emma Abbot hug ’’ and is famous throughout the American continent as ‘‘the Patti kiss”. It is a somewhat elaborate affair. The prima donna commences by seizing the fortunate Signor Gianni by both sides of his head, imprinting on his forehead a hearty salute, tlm sound of which reverberates through the theatre, then walking backwards she kisses both hands towards him over and over again, until finally in an agony of despair, she rushes from the apartment, only, alas, to immediately return bowing and smiling to an audience who enthusiastically roared “ Encore !”
