THE DUNEDIN MANSLAUGHTER CASE.
[per press association.J DUNEDIN, This day. The Wains were; brought up and sentenced this morning. The male prisoner pleaded that the Judge would be lenient on his wife’s account. The Judge refused to reserve the point raised by Mr Dennison, saying that the medical evidence was absolutely clear. Addressing the prisoner, he said that he concurred in the verdict, which would have been returned by any jury in any part of the Colony. Whilst giving weight to the jury’s recommendation to mercy, he pointed out that if the prisoners had by their act contemplated the child’s death, they were guilty of murder. He thought prisoners were animated towards the unfortunate child by a wicked evil spirit, and sentenced each to seven years penal servitude.
