A COOL SUGGESTION .

• 0. Under the above heading “ the following recently appeared in a Wellington paper :—lt is rather cool of the Melbourne Argus to want our now Governor to be handed over to Victoria. That colony already enjoys the services of Lord Normanby, who was one of the best Governors New Zealand ever had. Victoria has him now, and possibly may in turn have Sir William Jervois, after that distinguished officer has fulfilled his term of office in New Zealand. But it is rather hard that the Victorians should try to prevent our having him at all. It is eminently improbable that Sir William would “be promoted downstairs ” to New Zealand after being Governor of Victoria and wo hope our Victorian neighbours will be content to wait until Sir W. Jervois can be .promoted from New Zealand to Victoria, We can qnite understand that they would much like to have such an able military engineer at the head of affairs just now that so much interest is taken in “ colonial defences.” But the same rule applies to us, and we are just as desirous to have him. We hope that no hitch will arise as to Sir William’s appointment to New Zealand, where we feel convinced he will be a popular and successful representative of the Sovereign. On the other hand, Victoria is heartily welcome to our ex-Governor, Sir Arthur Gordon, and as the people of Jamaica do not seem at all anxious to secure him for that island, perhaps his transfer to Victoria might prove possible of arrangement, Wo earnestly commend this suggestion to the consideration of the Melbourne Argus as greatly superior in merit, fairness, and expediency to the cool proposal mentioned in yesterday’s telegrams. We are sure, too, that the people of New Zealand would rejoice greatly to hear of such promotion for their muchbeloved ex-Governor.
