TRICKETT BEATEN BY LAYCOCK.
At the Balmain Regatta on the Prince of Wales’ Birthday, E. Trickett and Laycock contested the “All Comers Sculling Match ” —first prize, £2O; second, £5. The match resulted ; Shark Island, E. C. Laycock, 1; Perseverance, E. Trickett, 2 ; Manchester, G. Perkins, 3; Cunbee, W. H. Wilson, oThe Sydney Telegraph gives the following account of the race:—This was the chief sculling race of the day, as it brought together the Hop Bitters’ winner, Australia’s champion, and an English representative. When the flag fell Perkins was the first to show in front, which he maintained until passing the flagship, Trickett and Laycock sculling side by side. Approaching White Horse Point, Trickett closed on Perkins, Laycock the meanwhile rowing in shore. On passing this point Laycock came to the front, and rounded Iron Cove buoy first, Trickett and Perkins making very wide turns. On making for the flagship Laycock had a three lengths’ lead, which he maintained until rounding, when ho separated, and placed half-a-dozon lengths between him and Trickett, who seemed to be labouring, while bis opponent appeared to lie full of “ go.” Going to Schnapper Island, about four lengths separated the two leaders, while Perkins struggled gamely on some 150 yards in the rear. Approaching the winning post, Trickett bad drawn up to within a length, when two boats sailed across both scullers, each to about the same extent. Laycock eventually won by about two lengths.
