WAVERLEY.

(KKOM OU» CORItKSrONDENT.) Nov. 28. There is at present considerable speculation as to (ho result of the controversy going on between the Waverley Town Board and the County Council re the license foes. The Council having refused to hand over the fees to the Board, the latter have placed the matter in the hands of a solicitor. It is a great pity that the all’air cannot bo adjusted without lawyers being dragged into it. It is, however, the fault of too much government. Wo have to submit to a double rate, the Council and Boaid each striking a rale of a shilling in the pound, and now it seems that a good part of those rates is to ho frittered away in law suits, simply because these local bodies cannot agree. The Dunedin appeal case would seem to bo a sullicient proof that the Town Districts are the proper bodies to issue the licenses, in which it would seem that the present licenses held by the publicans in this district are of no clfect, and the publicans themselves liable for selling without licenses. This however would bo rather hard on the publicans. Another complication in the case is that the fee paid by the publicans is £25, the licensing committee evidently considering them outside the limits of a Borough. The Town Dintricts, however, having the powers of a Borough as regards license, claim £lO re license. The result will bo interesting. Owing to the dispute between one or two local bodies, there seems little chance of our street getting metalled this summer, and there is every prospect of our being stuck in the mud for another winter. The concert on Friday to bo given by Mr Angelo Forrest, assisted by local amateurs, will bo a musical treat not often enjoyed in this part of the country, and there is no doubt a full house will welcome Mr Forrest on his arrival.
