THE MAYORALTY.
The election for Mayor took place today, and passed off very quietly. Beyond a few knots of people here and there in the street eagerly discussing the chances of the candidates, and the arrival at the polling booth of an occasional trap with voters, there was nothing to indicate that a contest was going on. During the early part of the (lay the returning officer, Mr Eylon, had plenty of time on his bands, but towards the close of the poll at six o’clock he was busy enough. Both candidates were about putting in a word where it was likely to be of use and the supporters of each were load in their expressions of confidence in their man. Mr Milroy had slightly the il call” in the betting, but Mr Sherwood’s supporters wore ready to back their opinion, and it is said that a good deal of money changed hands over the result. Shortly after six o’clock the Returning Officer declared the poll as follows : Milroy ... ... ... 71 Sherwood ... ... 64 Majority for Milroy 7 This announcement was received with cheers by a considerable number of people who had assembled to hear the result.
