LANDED AT LAST.

After a little bit of angling the Borough Council have hooked and landed that municipal fish, the £IO,OOO loan. The Government hook, although baited with proposals, rather different to what the. Council might have desired, has been swallowed ami everybody feels glad that the matter is settled. It now remains to dispose of the money. Part, say about £3OOO, has already been hypothecated, leaving £7OOO still to .be dealt with, and this is one of the questions which we

should like to hear discussed by the candidates for the Mayoralty. There is a large section of the.townspeople which would like to see £SOOO devoted to bar’ hour works instead of carrying out the proposed drainage scheme. The idea which gains most favour is that the Borough should lend the Harbour Board the money, and that the sum so lent, together with what could be' raised by means of a special rate on the town would form a respectable amount upon which to commence work, and that when it Was expended, sufficient good would have resulted to warrant the Harbour Board going to the country and raising a further loan when of course the Borough money would be refunded. We are strongly in favour of such a course ourselves, if it could be carried out. There may be difficulties in the way with which we are unacquainted. If so, we shall be glad, in common with the public, to hear them disclosed. Perhaps it will he found after all that they are not too great to be'surmounted.
