The Patea Mail. Established 1875. MONDAY, NOVEMBER 27, 1882. THE MAYORALTY.

We had hoped to have had an early opportunity of hearing the views of the two candidates for the Mayoralty. Both are so well known, and we may add so well qualified to hold the office, that the burgesses would have liked a little time to consider to whom they would give their vote. As it is the ballot box will be served op cold, so to speak, and no time will be given for the correction of any false impression which may be conveyed unintentionally or otherwise by interested parlies. To arrive at a decision as to which is the best man is an exceedingly difficult task, because each candidate possesses merits which the other does not. Mr Sherwood isknown to be an enterprising and goahead man, while on the other hand Mr Milroy is one of the most careful men in the district, and may safely be •trusted to watch - over the ratepayers’ expenditure with a jealous eye. To some extent we think the latter gentleman has the best claim, because we hold that the office of Mayor should be a rolling one. If we are to continue to have men of intelligence in the Council we must be prepared to reward them, and the only reward we can hold out is that they may occupy the honorable position of mayor of the town. This appears to ns to be about the only argument that can be advanced towards assisting .the ratepayers in their choice. We believe that the interests of the Borough will not suffer in the hands of whichever gentleman is elected, and no doubt the bulk of the ratepayers are of the same opinion. The contest therefore is likely to be decided more on personal than public grounds. -
