SAWMILL BURNT. Auckland.—Shortly after 12 o’clock last night, Roe’s sawmill at Onehunga was burnt. Two men sleeping in the upper storey had a narrow escape, being compelled to jump through the flames. The night watch states that shortly before 12 o’clock he passed the front of the building, when all was apparently safe. On returning,, he discovered the whole front to be 'burning, and there was no time to utilise the appliances on the premises for suppressing the fire. Being no fire service in Ohehnnga, the fire burnt itself out. Fortunately the wind was blowing fresh from the northeast, or the mill-sheds and a portion of the town would have suffered. The mill and outbuildings are insured in the Colonial for £650, but probably the loss to the company will not exceed .£SOO. Roe estimates the uninsured loss at £3OOO.

Returned Beer. Ashburton. The Commissioner of Customs has ordered that the beer seized at the three local breweries a short time since shall be returned. This will make a great difference to the brewers, who have already been heavily fined. Had they been forfeited the loss would have been very severe, Franklin Election Void. Auckland.—The North Frankin election has been declared void in consequence of the intimidation practised by Hattaway.

Attempted Burnings. Auckland.-—Two attempts were made last night to burn the National Hotel, Cambridge. At 7.30 two rooms were discovered on fire, bedding and furniture being destroyed.
