Committee’s Report ON THE HAWERA PETITION.

(Telegram from our Correspondent.) Wellington, Monday Night,

The committee of the Upper House bare reported on the petition of Hawera settlers against the Taranaki harbor scheme, and especially against the alleged illegal expenditure of funds by the Harbor Board at Now Plymouth. The committee report as follows: “ Whilst sympathising generally with the complaint of petitioners, your committee consider that the specific allegations of their petition have not been fully sustained by the evidence.

“ It is not certain that the new scheme for construction of harbor works will receive the necessary authorisation; but if authorised, its cost may possibly not exceed the limit fixed by law. If, as is alleged, there has been misappropriation or misuse of the land revenue, the whole of which is made strictly applicable to the purpose of the redemption of the loan raised upon its security, the petitioners would find a legal remedy by application to the Supreme Court. (Signed.) “De Renie Beett, “ Chairman.”
