CRICKET.

Civilians v. Armed Constabulary. A match between the above teams took place on the Batea Cricket Ground on Monday last, resulting, as will be seen by the scores below, in a victory for the A.C. by 14 runs in the first innings. The scores are inserted in lull, in order that our readers may judge for themselves what chance the. civilians would have had had they been able to finish their second innings. Play commenced at about about 11.13, the civilians taking the field, but nothing remarkable was noticed either on the part of the field or batsmen, Hobson and Cowan being the only two who managed to secure double figures, and all were disposed of for 71 —a total which the civilians expected and had every chance to top, as on the A.C . taking the field a nasty drizzle came on, which rendered fielding and bowling more difficult than hitherto. Messrs Pelch and Torroy played very steadily, and were the only two on the civilian side who contributed double figures, and at half-past one the first innings of the civilians closed for 37, or 14 short of their opponents. After lunch it was evident that the rain, which was coming - down thicker than ever, interfered considerably with the fielding, and, to make a long story short, all the efforts of the civilians to dislodge the warriors in time to secure an innings for themselves proved of no avail, and at 3.15 the A.C. had run up the creditable total of •214, contributed chiefly by Cowan (3(3), Jaeomb (30), and Inman (22), the first mentioned of these scores being put together by some really brilliant hits.
