CRICKET.

The first match of the season took place on Saturday last, in the paddock adjoining Major Turner’s residence, Carlyle, between the. heavy and light weights of the Carlyle Club. The weather was all that could be desired, and the attendance large, with a fair sprinkling of ladies, which added greatly to enhance the interest of the game. At half-past one the two captains (Fraser and McKay) tossed up for choice of innings, ami the latter gentleman having won the toss elected to put his opponents in first, but unfortunately some of the players did not roll up to time, the heavy Wrights were obliged to take the wickets* sending in Sutton and Taphu, to face- the bowling] of Fraser and Dasent, sen., the former starting the trundling from tho north wicket. The first ball delivered sent Taplln back to the pavilion with a “ duck,” his oIE-stump being floored by a shooter. Garwood followed, and soon put together nine, when he was caught by the wicket keeper. Croft came next, and played steadily and well, but soon after lost Sutton, who bad his timbers up-set by a trimmer from Fraser, which let in Arundell, who was soon busy, driving Dasent well for three, but after scoring two singles was taken at the wickets by Inman (who had been keeping wicket very creditably) oil: Fraser. McKay came next, and showed some pretty defence, scoring nine (principally singles), when be was nicely caught by Nicholson at mid-off. Horner followed, but soon after lost his paitrier Croft (who had been' playing steadily for half-au-honr), he being caught at tho wicket. Walker took the vacant wicket, but was soon sent to the right about by a shooter from Dasent. Cymes followed, but Horner was immediately after-stumped by Inman. Tony came next, but did not alter the score. Fraser, jun., was last man, but did not score, Symes immediately after giving a chance, which was accepted, the innings closing for 42. After ten minutes grace, the light weighty took thewicke s sending in Torment and 0. Dasent, to face the bowling of Garwood and McKay, tho latter starting from the north end. Runs came very slowly, when Tennent, after scoring three, was dismissed by Garwood. Inman took the vacant wicket, but soon lost his partner, Dasent being bowled by McKay, which let in Fraser, sen. Byes at this time were coming very freely (owing to the bad state of the ground for long stopping), and McKay retired in favor of Croft, "who with his first ball shot down Fraser’s off-stump with a “ break-back.” Nicholson followed, and in very quick time knocked up 15, when be was bowled by a trimmer from Garwood. Inman up to this time was playing very well. Dasent, sen., followed, but was soon run out. Tho rest of the innings called for no special comment, Meredith, B, Dasent, and Williams being bowled by Croft, and Baggett succumbed to Garwood, leaving Reddin, last man, not out, the innings closing for 88, or 40 in advance of their opponents. Time being young, the heavy weights again handled the “willow,” Garwood and Croft going to tin- wickets. The former was soon busy, gening one well to leg for three which he followed up in the

next over with a good leg hit for I'oiir. . Croft wan bowled by a “ hali'-vol ley ’’ from Eraser,- Arundel taking Ins place, but soon after lost Garwood, who was clean bowled by Ijjicholson, for 24. McKay followed, but after scoring two, succumbed to a “beauty” of Fraser’s. Taplin took the vacant wicket, and soon showed bo had not lost bis last year’s form, getting one well away for three, which he followed up by a good drive to the “on ” for a like number. He was soon after bowled by for 10. Torry was next and ilWfcst man, the stumps being drawn after a few mure runs had been added to the score. Four wickets for GU. In commenting on the day’s play, it would be unfair to criticise the merits of the players, this being the first game of the season. The fielding on both sides, with one or two exceptions, was Very loose, but we hope to see an improvement next Saturday, when the return match will be played. Wickets to be pitched at 1 o’clock sharp, and we trust to see the gentlemen selected to play roll-up to time. The following is the score ; Heavy Weights.
