DR. W. I. PATERSON

RELEASE FROM ARMV POSITION OBSCURE On Monday ol this week, Mrs H. Paterson advised His Worsli.p the Mayor, Mr S. J. Judd, that she had been advised by the doctor that their son, Capt. W. I. Paterson, could not be spared from tee Army to relieve as a medical practitioner for some three months during his father’s absence on account of illness. Mr Judd was of the opinion that more information sloulu be sought, and he told the Borough* Council tnat he proposed to make further enquiries. Since that time, in fact, on Thursday evening he spoke by phone to JDr. H. Paterson, who confirmed the news that his son was not to b© released. Dr. Paterson liaa been in conversation with BrigadierGeneral Bowerbank, w'lio is ui charge of Medical Serviced (Army and Air), and, presumably, the advice received was off:cial.

However, on Monday last, Hon. A. H. Nordmeyer, Minister of Health, in answer to a letter dated September 27th from Mr K. J. llolyoake, M.P., or. the subject, stated that ‘‘advice has been rece.v ed that the request will be accede J to. Capt. Paterson is expected to arrive at an early date.’’ Consequently, the position is somewhat obscure, and the explanation of the Minister’s letter may be that a later decision on behalf of the military authorities was not communicated to him. The mattei should not be allowed to rest, and if Capt. Paterson is not available, the needs of the district should be further stressed.
