HOLIDAY TRAVEL
SERVICES RESTRICTED A great restriction in the number of extra long-distance passenger transport services being run compared with even the early war Christmases is the chief characteristic of travel this Christmas. This ii so not only of the North Island railways, passengers oil which have been reduced by the permit system for long-distance travelling, but als > of the air services. An example of the reduction m long-distance holiday trains is the number leaving Wellington for Auckland today. Tlir<v trains wi leave Wellington for Auckland today, compared with nine last Christmas Eve. No night trains are being run from Wellington to Napier and Now Plymouth as on previous Christmas Eves. All seats on the Auckland trains today have been hooked. For journeys of less than 100 miles a number of extra trains ar<> being run ©specially to the Wairarapa, on which line traffic is particularly heavy That line gives access t„ few holiday resorts, and the only explanation for the large number of passengers to that district is that, many people whose homes are in the Wairarapa work in Wellington and want to go home for Christmas. No restriction is placed on air travel except that imposed by the number of journeys the aeroplanes make. Luck of equipment and staff has prevented much extension of the time-tables to meet the Christmas rush. No extra services ar,. bemb flown by Union Airways on the trunk route, but a few extra ar© lie ing made by Cook Strait Airways this week. As is usual even at other times of the year the planes have been booked out weeks in advance.
