Marshal Boris Shaposhnikov has been appointed Defence Commissar and Commander in Chief of Soviet Forces, he has also been given a seat on tlie central committee of the Communist Party. The functions oi Commander in Chief were previously discharged by a defence committee, under Stalin’s chairmanship, consisting of Marshals Shaposhmkov, Voroshilov, Budenny and Timoshenko. The New York Times’ says Marshal Shaposhniskov’s appointment is a significant move designed to halt the Germans on the western front. Marshal ’Shaposhnikov a former Tsarist officer, is credited with several miraculous Russian recoveries since last winter and liis new appointment may augur a co-ordinated Russian counter-attack on ’many sectors simultaneouslv.
Moscow reports that Marshal Shaposhnikov has been awarded the Order of Lenin on his 60th birthday.
