FIFTY YEARS AGO
(From the “Pahiatua Star' 5 of July Ist, 1890).
The entertainment given on Friday evening by the scholars attending the Pahiatua school, passed off in a most successful manner and reflects great credit on the whole of the teachers. We <lo not say scholars were perfect in all they did but any little defect will no doubt be remedied on the next occasion they appear before the public. The singing was under the management of Miss Falla and she was amply rewarded for the pains she had taken by the loud applause that followed each piece sung by the scholars. Mrs Yeats is entitled for a word of praise for the excellent manner in which girls went through the French bar ard calesthenic ring exercises The several recitations were very well given. There was a good attendance, over £8 being taken, which sum will be a great help to school committee in its straitened circumstances.
A meeting was held in the Eketahuna school room oi Thursday evening for ihe purpose of forming a Fire Brigade. Mr T. Bayliss was voted to the chair. It was unanimously resolved to take steps to form a Brigade at once. Mr Wallace was elected captain. Mr Brenmuhl foreman and Mr Bennett secretary. These gentlemen were empowered to make enquiries as to what money could be subscribed and to report to a later meeting.
