NUMBER 13 SCHEME. Confirmation of the telegram authorising the continuation of No. 13 scheme in Pahiatua was received yesterday by the Mayor (Mr S. K. Siddells) in a letter from the Minister of Labour (Hon. P. C. Webb). The letter stated that a full subsidy had been agreed on for men on the Np. 13 scheme__in Pahiatua for a period of two months, after which the matter would be reviewed.

Since the receipt of the telegram, over a week ago, five of the No. 33 scheme men on Borough work ha?e gone scrub-cutting, and one has gone to the Makuri Gorge, leaving only 11 still employed by the Borough. It is not yet known what effect the removal of men from other occupations by recruiting will have on unemployed men on the scheme, but it is expected that an eventual shortage of man-power will clear up the whole position.
