PAHIATUA ROAD MAINTENANCE
GRANT FROM HIGHWAYS BOARD. Advice that tlie Main Highways had agreed to give a grant of 5 (£3 to £l> to assist in attending to the extraordinary maintenance work required on the Pahiatua Road as a result of the increased traffic which used the road when the Manawatu Gorge was last blocked, was received yesterday by the Kairanga County Council from rhe Minister of Public Works (Hon. R. Semple). our suggestion that a number °t men now working on No. 60 highway might be transferred ’to carry out improvements on the Pahiatua Road alter their present work is completed,” the Minister added, “has been given consideration, but m my view opportunity should bo taken to observe the position which will arise when the Woodville to Ashhurst Road is opened for traffic, which will be towards the end of this year. It seems also that the section of the Pahiatua Road within the Kairanga Comity has been improved extensively during the past few years with unemployed workmen and requires very little, if any. additional attention.“
The council expressed gratification at the grant of £75.
