FAREWELL SOCIAL AND DANCE.
MR AND MRS. I). MITCHELL HONOURED. A large crowd of friends and well-wishers thronged the Foresters’ Hall last night to bid farewell to Mr and Mrs D. Mitchell and family on the occasion of their approaching departure for Nelson. Dancing to music supplied by Mr Ken Hicks was the order of the e veiling and the programme of modern and old-time dances arranged by Mr Leith Parker, the M.C., went through with a swing. At a break in the dance programme, tap-dances by Miss Joan Brabner were received with rousing applause by the gathering. A delicious home-made supper, provided by the ladies, and ably handled by Mrs AY. Bowden and Mrs \Y. J. Mills, was much appreciated by the dancers, after which Mr Leith Parker made a presentation to Mr and Mrs Mitchell. It was a very unhappy duty he had to perform, he said, since Pahiatua was losing some very good citizens with the departure of .Mr and Mrs Mitchell and their family. Air Mitchell had served as line foreman for a number of years, and all subscribers had nothing but kind words for him. Any time there was anything out of order he was always on the job, often in most unpleasant conditions. The people of Pahiatua felt that they could notlose him without some recognition of his services and some token of gratitude. On behalf of the public of Pahiatua, he asked Mr Mitchell to accept an armchair, and hoped that when sitting in it, with his feet on the mantlepiece, he would remember his Pahiatua friends. After the presentation was made, -Margaret- Mills handed Mrs Mitchell a bouquet. Mr and Mrs Mitchell being accorded musical honours and three cheers. On behalf of their friends and school-mates, Miss Beverley Mitchell and Doug., Rex and Owen were also remembered. Mr Mitchell, in reply, remarked how glad he was to see so many friends present to do honour to himself and Mrs Mitchell. He had been in Pahiatua for 14 years, during which time he had made many friends. It was hard to break so many friendships, but it was a case of moving on now and then, and it had to be done. On behalf of his wife and himself, he thanked all friends for their wonderful send-off, especially Air and Airs Bowden and Mr and Airs Alifls. Dancing then continued, aftersupper extras being played by Airs H. Hirst, and a very pleasant gathering concluded with the singing of “Aukl Lang Syne.”
