PAHIATUA COUNTY COUNCIL
THE MONTHLY MEETING AFFAIRS OF THE DISTRICT. The Paliiatua County Council held its monthly meeting in the Council Chambers yesterday. The chairman (Cr. A. \Y. Bisset) presided, and there were present C'rs. F. S 11. Bolton, F. T. Horne, T. Foully, A. H. Eglinton, F. V. Bryant, H. R. Whitta, the County clerk (Mr J. Hutton), the overseer (Mr S. Mac- ' rrae) and the engineer (Mr H. Sladden). An apology was received from Cr. C. H. Hodgins. Accounts amounting to £o()48 Us lid were passed for payment. A recommendation from the Finance Committee was received, suggesting that while disposing of the road frontage of the Cemetery Reserve to the Borough Council, a portion sufficient to permit of road improvements be retained by the County. The chairman advised retaining half a 'square chain of this frontage on the corner, it was decided to carry out the recommendation . CORRESPONDENCE. A letter from the New Zealand Counties Association re. insurance of Council members was received. The chairman said that the opinion was that the legislation was purely permissive and not mandatory on the part of the Council to insure members while on County business. Communications from the State Advances Corporation of New Zealand were read, notifying that the final balance of £3OOO on the Bridges Loan of £SOOO had been remitted, and the payment of monies for the £°7oo Housing Loan had gone forward. With regard to the Bridges Loan of £3OOO, the County clerk said that he had referred to this in his report. He was of the opinion that they w T ould get the loan, although perhaps not on the terms asked. \ circular vas received from the Transport Department regarding Road Safety week. The County clerk reported that the County had cooperated as far as possible. Th - Bureau of Industry wrote advising that the existing units for resale of petrol provided sufficient facilities for the district, and declining the Council’s application. The chairman said that it appeared the Borough could buy petrol at the same prices in drum lots from the .merchants as the County could give, a\nd could get the same facilities. The letter was received. A letter from the Minister of Internal Affairs with regard to the Physical Welfare and Recreation Act. 1937, reported the proposed ; constitution of district committees in each local district, consisting of representatives from the district and from the Health Department, Smaller district committees would have it members, and their first work would he a survey of the recreatipnal facilities of the Dominion, with reference to their own district. —Ihe County clerk reported attending a meeting locally on this matter, where it had been decided to appoint one member of each local body to the committee. Cr. A. W. Bisset was appointed as the County repreeentative. The Department of Internal Affairs wrote advising that supplies of Areeoline Hydro-bromide were now available for hydatid prevention. The chairman said that the treatment seemed a good thing, and it was worth while for everyone to apply it. The letter was received. The Wairarapa Hospital Board advised of fees written off to a total of £3791 4s Bd.—Cr. Bolton reported that the total for the year was not quite as high as in previous years. A letter was received from the Public Works Department advising that the acceptance of the tender of Messrs New Zealand Laykold, Ltd., for £1196 19s Id for improvements to the Mangaone Valley highway at 11 miles had been approved.—The County clerk reported that the successful tenderer had been advised that the acceptance was approved, • but had not yet signed up for the contract. A letter from the Public Works advising that the width of the bridge on the Makuri-Ongaha highway had Been decided on as 25 feet was received. Another letter front the same source recommending special attention to the conditioning and maintenance of Alain Highways under the control of the County during the Xmas and New Year period was referred to the overseer. Minutes of a meeting of the Wairarapa Centennial Committee were received. Discussion on Centennial matters followed. Mr Hutton, as the Northern representative on the Wairarapa committee, said that they should advertise the district as much as possible through the Centennial court. He stressed the scenic attraction presented by the MakuriCoonoor drive, and commented that ibhere was nothing in the way of photographs to illustrate this route. Some visible record of that route i should he obtained. It was suggested that the drive might be filmed or photographs taken. After some discussion, it was decided to allow £lO towards expenses in this matter. tile County Clerk to approach the Progressive Association for their co-operation.
