THE "ARMY" IN FRENCH GUIANA
The story of the work of the Salvation Army in French Gi.iana for men who Tfad served terms of imprisonment on Devil’s Island, the notorious French penal settlement, caused some amusement when it was related bv Colonel George H. Holmes, of I.on - don, in an address in Christchurch. Colonel Holmes said that the Army had opened a sort of friendly club on the mainland, where the men could play draughts and otliei games, and where they were, given refreshments in the eveiiim.!. One evening the light went out suddenly and when the power was restored all the furniture and knives forks, spoons and plates had disappeared Three or four days later the missing goods were on display in second-hand dealers’ shops. However, the Army was not discouraged, and bought back most of the stolen property.
