EKETAHUNAS HALF-DAY.

RETAILERS MEET. NO CHANGE TO BE MADE. A meeting of retailers and departmental heads convened by the Eketahuna Progressive Association, was on Thursday night presided over by the Mayor. The object was to consider the half-holiday question. In introducing the matter the Mayor advised the meeting to be careful and not do anything hasty. He did not consider the meeting was fully represent;, ti ve and he advised that before taking any action they should take a postal ballot, as in Foxton. They did not want to make a fool of the thing but to do it properly. Considerable discussion followed in which supporters of both sides of the question expressed their views, but from the speakers it was evident that the majority were not in favour of a change. Mr A. H. Herbert said that personally he had no objection to Saturday, but he thought a change was premature because their neighbouring town had not yet settled the question. If the town decided on Saturday his firm would be quite willing to fall in with it, but it did not intend to take any lead in making the decision. Whatever was done they must not estrange the people. The Mayor of Pahiatua had said up there that whatever Pahiatua did Eketahuna would follow. He had no authority for making that statement. Eketahuna did not follow Pahiatua, and the statement was an impertinence. They had trouble once and did not want to get into it again. His firm was not going to use one argument to influence Saturday closing. After further discussion, it was decided that no action be taken in the meantime.
