WAIHOU MURDER.

SECOND EDITION

HAVE CLUES BEEN OBTAINED P RENEWED POLICE ACTIVITY. Electric Telegraph—Press A—u i:; 1 . 101 l WHANGAKEL Last Night. Police investigations in the Waihou valley murder case seem to be developing towards a crisis. They are very reticent and decline to release any information concerning their movements. It is understood that a police car containing Detective-Sergeant Walsh, two constables and two detectives from Wellington, left Auckland early yesterday morning for the valley and it is also believed Inspector J. Cummings, of Palmerston North, if not already in the party, will follow later. (Indications are that within the next few days something definite will result from the man-hunt carried on with unremitting zeal for seven weeks. (Inspector Cummings left Palmerston North on Saturday). Shot in the back at close range, a well-known North Auckland farmer, Mr Ernest Severin Nelson, married, aged 5-5, was murdered on a lonely drive leading to his house at Waihou valley, about two miles from Okaihau, on June 10. It was very dark when the crime was committed at about 7.30 o’cleok. The moon had not risen and it was raining. Mr Nelson’s body was found over two hours later on the metalled drive, which runs up nearly a mile from the main road to the house. There was no sign of a gun in the vicinity. Following his usual custom. Mr N elson left his house to collect his mail from the letter-box on the main road. He had apparently reached the box, taken out the mail, and proceeded 100 yards on his return journey when the shot was fired. The charge struck him just J>elo\r the left shoulder blade, and passed through the left lung into the right lung.
