The Madrid correspondent of the British united Press says the Minister of Communications, Senor do los Rios, announces that a military rising has broken out at Melilla, Spanish Morocco. He claims that the revolt is strictly limited to Melilla and that complete tranquility prevails in Spain itselfLIMITED TO CERTAIN CITIES. MADRID, July 18. The Government communique says* that a part of the army in Morocco has risen against the republic, perpetrating the criminal ant of rebellion against a legitimately constituted power The movement is exclusively limited to certain cities in the protectorate zone and n-obody in Spain has joined the absurd scheme. On the contrary, Spaniards are unanimously indignant at a shameful act which was frustrated from the outset. The Government, is pleased to announce that heroic groups of loyal elements are resisting sedition and defending the republic. SHOPS CLOSED; TRANSPORT CEASED. GIBRALTAR, July 18. The revolt- is reported to have affected several cities in Morocco. The rebels occupied military headquarters at Ceuta and workers declared a general strike. All shops are closed and transport has ceased. GOVERNMENT CLAIMS MASTERY PARIS, July 18. Broadcast messages picked up from Madrid stated that army aircraft art.bombing the rebels at" Melilla and Ceuta. A delayed message from Madrid reports that parties of Moroccan rebels ,are landing on the Spanish coast. A later message from Spain states that the Spanish Government has issued a communique that “the Government is master of the situation and intends to maintain Republican institutions and has full faith in the- army’s loyalty.” Other messages reaching Paris from Spain declare that incidents occurred at Cuenca, 90 miles from Madrid.
The number of the victims is not yet known. SITUATION OBSCURED. LONDON, July 18. "VV hat is actually happening in Spain in still obscure, but reports Jrom Paris state that Cabinet met all night. Trouble has long been expected, especially in view of the numerous brutal murders in the past fortnight. Fascists and Socialists are continually attacking each other, in the streets and the Government lias made wholesale arrests of Fascists since the Sotelos murder owing to reports that a Fascist coup is being planned. Right wing newspapers have been indefinitely susp<*nded. It appears, however, that the trouble is confined to Melilla, where martial Jaw luls been, declared. The firmer Minister of Communications states that Colonel Elitlia. revolted with the troops of the Melilla garrison and that the general officer commanding surrendered. General Mora to, commander-in-chief in Spanish Morocco, is rushing up and it is believed he will speedily suppress the rising. REBELS SEIZE RADIO. MADRID, July 18. Juan Minister of the Interior, m a broadcast speech, declared that the rebels had seized the radio station at Ceuta from which they are issuing, false news purporting to come from the Government station at Seville, including a report that revolutionaries have occupied the Ministries at Madrid, seizing himself and the Minister of War. “Moles added that, on the contrary, all was quiet in Madrid. The Under-Secret ary of the Interior, announced that the Foreign Legion at C euta, supported by native troop,s and other units whose identity, so far is not known, attacked the loyal troops. civilians and aerodromes, but the movement was confined to Melilla and Ceuta. Troops, the Air Force and naval men are mobilising to fight the rebels, who are still in possession of strategical points. Two Spanish cruisers and a seaplane have gone to Melilla from Cartagena. Tt is reported from the-border that the outbreak began when legionaries were jeered at from the ex-Socialist headquarters at Melilhv, whereupon the legionaries broke their ranks, entered the building and threw some ef the occupants from the windows after a fierce hand to hand fight. Within an hour 2000 Spanish and Moorish troop® in the neighbourhood cf Melilla had revolted. The movement spread like wildfire to Ceuta and fighting occurred in the townships of Zooo, .lends, Angera, Earache. Arzil.’a and Alksar.
