BOROUGH AFFAIRS.
LAST NIGHT S BUSINESS. MEETING OF COUNCIL. The monthly meeting of the Pahiatua .Borough Council, adjourned from Monday, was held last night, there being in attendance the Mayor (Cr. J. D. Wilson). Crs. S. K. Siddells, W. T. Brown, F. Brit land, J. W. Sturton, J. Murphy, V. - Murch and A. D. Donald. Apologies were received from Crs. T. W. A\ atts and A. W. Carthew. Correspondence was received from : Hawefa Golf Club, Castled iff Club and Wellington College, making enquiries re Berrigan Qualcast five gang mower.—Received. Wairarapa Hospital Board: That the Council has no objection to the laising of £20,000. —Received. Masterton County: That this Council agrees to the allocation of heavy traffic fees for two years on the basis of Counties 75 per cent, and Boroughs 2-5 per cent.—Received. Municipal Association of New Zealand notifying that His Worship the Mayor has been appointed as delegate by the Council to the conference to he held at Napier on March 4th, 1936.—Received. Commissioner of Transport giving notice of warrant determining proportions of heavy traffic fees payable in respect of collection of fees by local authorities and their apportionment by the Minister of Transport under which the Council now' receives 5 per cent, instead of 2 4 per ce n t. —liecei v ed. Messrs .Seaton, Sladden and Pavitt: Reporting that the reconstruction work on the Tiraumea Road has been completed and the tax priming coat and that after a period of two or three weeks the bitumen sealing coat will be applied—Received.
Messrs Adams and Tinney requested the Council to make a water connection to a vacant section owned by the Cotter estate and leased by Air Gunn..—Cr. Murphy thought the request was a reasonable one and said the estate had paid ra.tes to the Council for many years. Provided the estate paid half the cost of the connection he saw no reason why the request should not he granted. Cr. Sturton supported the request, and it was pointed out that the Council was bound to bring the water to a certain point. It was accordingly left to the Works Committee to take whatever steps were necessary and make a charge ot half the cost it the pipe is required outside the prescribed connection limit.
GENERAL. On the motion of the Alayor and Cr. Aim-ell, the statutory shops half-holiday was fixed for” Wednesday. By-laws relating to shop signs and bicycle 'traffic were confirmed, and will come into force in Februarv 1986. ' ’ Ihe Council adopted the recomii endation of the A\ orks Committee for the installation ol a concrete culvert at the intersection of Cambridge and Huxley Streets. ho Town Clerk was granted permission to attend the annual conference of the Now Zealand Institute ol Town Clerks to be held at Napier on Afarc-h .3. 11)36. A request from Air H. A. Bick for the tarring of the footpath between lyndall and Huxley Streets was referred to the Works Committee for a report. Air A. Neil’s application for a building permit, and Air J. Al. Tolmie’s request for a water connection were agreed to. THE RECREATION GROUND. C r. Murphy asked that somethiug be done to have a. cricket pitch put down oil the recreation ground, remarking that at present it resembled a sheep yard Cr. Donald: -A stockvard.’’ Cr. Brown uomtod out that the Council had deputed Air Liwrv to engage several men on the cricket pitch, and said that members of the cricket club were to show what tlicy wanted done in this respect, but he was not sure this had been done, and if so it was their ( ,wn Tho Mayor; Our past exjierienee with the cricket club makes one come to the conclusion that tin's has not been done. A discussion then followed on the question of using the present old mower with a short cutting attachment, and Cr. Sturton was opposed to spending »*».V more money on the old in acl line which was showing signs ol wear. Ihe Works Committee is to make an inspection on the mower and report back to the Council. THE FINANCES. Accounts totalling €948 17s 7d Were passed for payment, bringing the total expenditure for the period to December to £-5134 13s od. The total receipts to date were £4133 17 s Bd, and of this amount £.515 l.s 9d came to hand during December, rates (£229 12s Id) being the Principal source of revenue. i ? h eo-cT e o’ ditl:ri ‘ ’T to ,lat V totalled £3', 61 9s.
