The Pahiatua Herald. PUBLISHED EVERY EVENING "WEDNESDAY, DEC. 18, 1935. GERMANY IS PAYING.

German economy has reached, a pretty pass. There is a shortage of butter and to a lesser degree, of pork, and the masses are wondering why. As in wartime long queues are to be seen waiting outside butter stores and meat shops with a policeman ever handy to quell the bickering and testy tempers which are in evidence. Tor the people keep complaining of their lot- and want to know what the sacrifices are in aid of now. Mi tier keeps this state of affairs as quiet asi possible and absolutely forbids photographers to snap the queues. The truth of the whole matter is that Germany is sacrificing all other interests to the speeding up of German re-armament. The populace may be in favour of German re-armament but the need for such haste is not nearly so apparent. German families are restricted to a quarter of a, pound of butter per day and have to wait hours in line for that. The .Nationalist Socialist rulers may be “making history” in some directions but in doing so are engendering a feeling of growing discontent. The Nazi administration sucessfully engineered a boom in the country but the price being paid for the boom is now beginning to strain the nation's resources. The boom has been financed by the virtual cancellation of foreign debts which has speiTTecT the end of foreign credits. Germany's total debt has been variously estimated at from 17.000.000,000 to 20,000,000.000 marks which is clearly close to the danger mark and the country will soon be faced with, the choice of slowing down expenditures or taking the risk of outright inflation.. And their last experience of the latter should deter them from a repetition.
