IN THE HOUSE.
MEMBERS IN WORKING WOOL. With a. view to getting through, the remaining legislative programme by the end of this week the Houso of [Representatives resumed at 11 o'clock yesterday morning. Members were in the mood for work, and for a time the progress on private and Local Bills was rapid.
An assurance had been given that, generally, there was “no dynamite' 7 in the measures, and no fewer than three private measures and 14 local Bills were put through final stages and passed. Two of the sheaf only proved to be contentious, these being the Auckland Metropolitan [Milk Amendment Bill—Wellington appears to be well ahead of the northern city in respect of mjlk purveying—and the Wellington High Levels Tramway Amendment and Empowering Bill. The last-mentioned measure was held over for further con side-rat ion. Four new Bills were introduced and added to the Government’s programme. Of these two were introduced by Govern o-r-General’s Message at a. fairly late hour, provoking the Leader of the Opposition-. [Mr M. J. Savage, to ask sharply when “the shower of Bills wa s to come to an end.” The Prime Minister. Rt. Hon. G. W. Forbes, mentioned that two more would be brought down.
In the Legislative Council unanimous support was given to the measure empowering the New Zealand Government to apply economic sanctions against Italy under the Covenant of the League of Nations. Several members made it clear that they were prepared if necessary to sanction the imposition of naval and military sanctions in the collective cause of world peace. A note of regret was expressed over the economical restriction of military training in New Zealand.
