BOWLING.

MAXAWATU CENTRE. The Manawatu Bowling Centre held its annual meeting at Palmerston North Messrs N. H. Nash ana R Henderson representing Pahiatua. Movin' the adoption of the bal-ance-sheet. the chairman pointed out that tlie centre would begin t* l ® season with a moderate credit. There were some who held that the centre should not accumulate any iunds. hut Mr Nash inclined to the view that they should always have some money in hand to meet tournament contingencies. The Northern Club s suggestion for an annual veterans' ciay. for players, of 70 years of age ;<nd over, was a. sound one, and it was a move that had been inaugurated -with great success in Wellington. Visits should be made if jiossible to Auckland, Hastings, Napier and Dannevirke in the course of the current season. Mr Larcomb raised the matter of the levy charged by the centre ou all the individual clubs. He considered s tl < unt paid to the headquarters in Wellington was considerable less than that collected, a reduction should be made in the charge for this year. Mi Na-h suggested that as memlikely to decline all round this year, there would be a need for sustained financial support. Mr Larcomb. however, considered that tins was all the more reason why some consideration should be extended to struggling clubs. The election of officers resulted r.s follows:—Patron Mr H. I'. Horne; President. Mr J. A. Nash, M.P. ; vice-presidents. Messrs J Bartholomew. J. J. Bartholomew! P. S. JLarcomb; lion. secretary, Mr A, F. Wfmsett ; lion, auditor. Air W. Hunter; tournament committee, Messrs A. Cooksley, J. B. Gerrand, I’. S. Larcomb, N. H. Nash, J. K. Paton, .J. .J. Gordon. PAIRS AT NEW YEAR. The Northern Club forwarded a remit, passed at its annual meeting, ■suggesting a rinks tournament for the New Year Centre tourney. Mr McKinnon favoured the suggestion, but it had to be borne in mind that many country clubs could not get a rink away at the holiday season, and if the suggestion were adopted country clubs should have an opportunity to stage a pail’s tourney. It was agreed that a. pairs tournament he held, this being carried by a majority vote. SEPARATE SECTION OVER THE RANGE. The Easter tournament 54 to he a rink one, this being agreed to without discussion. A suggestion was made that the competition should be conducted on an area section basis.

This came from the Palmerston N. Club. ■ Afr Trueman did not favour the scheme, declaring that most outside players were always glad to come to Palmerston North, and if play were confined to their own district, they uould have little incentive to compete, as district competitions were conducted in any case. Air Bartholomew said toe was “dead against” the scheme, for Feilding members also appreciated a visit to Palmerston North. The whole object of a centre tournament was that it brought them into contact with outside players. Air Horne said the idea should not be condemned before it had been examined. Section play would undoubtedly have the effect of improving entries, probably adding as many as 30 rinks. The country players were always outnumbered by Palmerston North rinks, and if 10 in each district could be formed into a section, it would foster interest in the game. Air Horne moved that section play he adopted for the Easter tournament. Air Henderson seconded. The chairman commented that four tournaments would be in progress at the same time, and a complicated position would be created. Air McK innon spoke in a similar strain to Mr Horne. Mr Williamson said the idea was one that would exclude entries from further afield, and would not have the effect of increasing: entries. A combined tournament should he continued. Bowlers were desirous of meeting the best players of New Zealand if possible. Mr Henderson pointed to the financial difficulties of country clubs. Mr Ramsay suggested that Southern Hawke’s Bay could be formed into a section, and the remainder of the district could continue as in the past. The section could then join up for (he final stages. Mr Horne said there was no intention on the part of the people over the ranges to disintegrate the centre. Mr Horne’s amendment was defeated, and Mr Ramsay then moved that a separate section he constituted in Southern Hawke’s Bay, if sufficient entries were forthcoming. They could then coins to Palmerston North for post-section 7 lay This amendment was carried, although not by a unanimous vote. The entry fee for the New Year tournament was fixed at 10s per player, the same as last year. Prize money is also to be retained at the same as for last year. •;, /;>, At Easter the fee will bU 10s, a reduction of 2s Cd as compared with last year. Prize money was fixed at £2O. Pleas were made for more wholehearted support of country clubs. Mr Cook si ev considering that there should be a larger attendance at gala days for the pountry clubs.

At the annual meeting of the Manawatu Bowling Centre. Mr J. A. Nash. M.P.. was re-elected to the presidency for the ensuing year. I his is the twentieth occasion on which Mr Nash has been honoured with the position. THE PAIRS TOURNEY. During the discussion on the pairs tourney at New Year the opinion was expressed by Mr N. H. Nash (Pahiatua Club delegate) that no young player would ever become skilful unless he learned in a rink. Even though a weak rink was beaten, considerable knowledge was to be gained. Two bowls had to be played much more carefully than four. THE EASTER FIXTURE

Tll regard to the Easter fixture Mr N. H. Nash, as a representative of the Pahiatua Club, said it had issued definite instruction to its delegates to support the 71 rope sal. Tt was therefore hoped that the proposal would be carried as it would be in the interests of the clubs over the range.

THE LOCAL GREEN. A number of those members who have been getting the local green in eider played their first game this season on" Saturday afternoon.
