RATES OF PAY DISPUTED.
UNION GOES TO COURT. Electric Telegraph—Tress Association THAMES. September 5. # A case of interest to- ii dust rial circles was heard to-day in the Magistrate's Court before Mr F. W. Platts. S.M. The* Thames Miners' Union claimed £IOO penalty against Kuranui Golden Hills Ltd. in respect to the employment of two men below tile award_ rates. They were working on the Kurauui Pioneer low-grade ore treatment plant, operating for the past nine months, and were paid 10s a day. the award* rate being 16s less cuts equal to 13s 2d. Counsel for the union stated that the company was assisted by the Unemployment Board under scheme SB to the extent of 30s weekly for married men and 15s weekly for single men. The ?ompany also was granted free power by the Public Works De partment’s mill. The union decided to prosecute v lien negotiations for an understanding with the management failed.
Counsel for the company stated that the operations would cense if award rates had to be paid. The Unemployment Board made no objection to the rates paid the men, and claimed that the case came under the 1932 legislation exempting workmen employed under a scheme approved by the Unemployment Board. The managing director gave evidence that 27 men were employed who otherwise would be on relief. The union's- counsel submitted that the board could not sefc aside the award. Decision was reserved.
