THE 105th BIRTHDAY. lhe Glasgow Herald celebrated 2 ! ..' January 27 its one hundred and fiftieth birthday—or rather, to be strictly accurate, that of the Glasgow- Advertiser, which it absorbed early last century. Such a span opportunity for a graphic and lively survey not only of the foi tunes and direction of a newspaper, but of the life oi the readers who have relied upon it as their chief journal. The Herald seizes the occasion well. A thirtv-two-page supplement issued on January 27 presents Glasgow- m 1873 and since, with an accuracy and liveliness that will attract the stranger. The record starts with Cullodeu still a vivid memory in the minds of older readers. It passes through the fall of the tobacco lords after the American War of independence to the industrial revolution in Britain. If watches Hie growth of the shipyards and the engineering works, and, with this, of the population from a mere 45,000 to over a million. The record is enlivened with a wealth of picturesque detail and personal anecdote and with a welcome number of well chosen illustrations.
