NEWCASTLE OVERWHELMED VICTORY BY 44 TO 6. United Press Assn.—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright. SYDNEY, June 29. The All Blacks completely overwhelmed Newcastle at the Sportsground this afternoon in the second match of the tour, winning by 44 points to six. The local team put up a fair showing in the first half, but were absolutely -powerless to stop the onslaught of the visitors in the second period. Holder, Page, Proctor and Manchester were the most outstanding players on the visiting side, the big forwards being everywhere alter the ball. Page and Holder failed at goal-kicking. There was real football weather, the ground being soft following the rain. Newcastle won the toss and Holden scored within a minute of the start. Penalties were frequent. New Zealand secured the ball in practically every line-out and at the interval the scores were 15—3 in favour of the visitors. Shortly before the adjournment Max retired with a fractured ankle. The All Blacks were never really extended. Proctor scored five tries, Holder three and limes, Caughey, Steele and Hore one each. Corner kicked four goals, all in the second spell. Caughey replaced Buliock-Douglas at the last minute. The N eweastle team were: T. Hills, Rose, J. Hills, Hingston, James, V. McNamara, Rutherford, Tobin, Champion, Parbury, G. McNamara, Bland, Deglorion, McDonald, Horler. The manager (Air Wallace) and Lilburne emphatically deny the report that the latter will stay here and play for Manly. MAX’S INJURIES. NEWCASTLE, June 29. Medical examination of Max disclosed that lie lias fractured a small bone in the ankle which is being X-rayed to-morrow. He cannot play next Saturday and may not play again during the tour. Caughey replaced Buliock-Douglas before the game started. The latter is not reported injured.

WELLINGTON BEAT TARANAKI

HAWERA. June 29. A crowd of between 4000 and 5000 people witnessed the visiting Wellington Rugby representatives win by a margin of three points over Taranaki in a sparkling display this afternoon. Wellington compiled 18 points (three converted tries and 4 goal from a mark) and Taranaki registered four unconverted tries and a penalty goal. Both sides played a 3-2-3 scrum. Taranaki holding an advantage in this department, and in. the general forward play. though Wellington fielded a more impressive rear division.

Neal and Reid were injured, and were replaced by Hislop and Bvdder The opening ' stages of the “game were dull, hut alter a drab quarter of an hour both teams settled down to a fast, enterprising game. Macdonald (wing), Killeen (centre), and lin Jill (half) were the outstanding Wellington backs, and Diederieh, Stiver and Reid were the most impressive forwards. Gudgeon (half), Petty (centre), and Johnston (fiveeighths), were Taranaki’s star backs, Wetere being the outstanding forward.

In the first spell, which ended 10 points to 9 in Wellington’s favour, laranaki had everything in their favour, but on the change-over Wellington gave flashes of brilliant combined movements, and were more consistent and better able to maintain the pace. The laranaki forwards tired and lacked the sting which characterised the loose rushes of the earlier stages, while the visiting backs showed more initiative and better handling, their display meriting the narrow decision.

RUGBY AT MANGATAINOKA

There was an exciting finish to the Athletic-Maingatainoka senior football match at the “Toki” Domain, .yesterday afternoon. There were one or two defections from both teams and Athletic managed to l win, out liv b. points to 4, clinching the issue right oil the .call of time. Ihe game, territorially, was very even. Playing fourteen men. Mangatainoka made a stern fight of it. The town backs handled brightly and executed two smart tries. Athletic were first to open, an account when the whole back line handled from a scrum and Jack Moran, on the wing, finished the movement off well to score a pretty try in the corner. Bentley missed the kick. In the second half V. Brown “pqtfed ' a very deliberate goal for “Joki,’ the leather sailing square between the uprights. The home team maintained its one point lead till practically the call of time when again the Athletic backs got on the move. M. Richardson made a good opening and Russell Mills, improved the position and passed to J. Moran who again raced over to score. Bentlev failed to convert. There was some dispute as to whether the match, had gone over the time limit and there was some talk of Mangatainoka entering a protest. Mr O. Stone refereed. THIRD GRADES DRAW. The Alangatainoka and Athletic thirds played a pointless draw on the Recreation Ground yesterday afternoon. The ground was very heavy but the bovs gave a spirited display. Mangatainoka could only field fourteen men, playing one short in the forwards and they did remarkably we'l to share the honours as they did. Mr M. Orane refereed.
