PAHIATUA TAXI SERVICES
BETWEEN TOWN AND RAILWAY LOCAL PETITION. The No. 6 Transport Licensing Authority met at Palmerston North yesterday, applications for new services and time-tables being dealt with. A license to run a service between Pahiatua and the Pahiatua railway station, a distance of one and three-quarter miles, was sought by Messrs W. E. Yewen and G. Jones through Mr Siddells, who presented a petition from 300 Pahiatua residents. It was stated that one license had already been granted for the route but both the present applicants had been operating over the same way for years. They attended a very high percentage of the trains arriving. An objection to the licensing of another service was lodged on behalf’ of Mr B. H. Wills, who operated over the same route, which, it was maintained, was already sufficiently served. Mr Wills, it was stated, had met the trains regularly for the last 15 years, and had erected a garage at a cost of £6OO to house his cars. The population of the town was only 1200 or 1300, and of the county 30t)O. It was submitted that Messrs Jones and Yewen held taxi licenses, which was inconsistent with a regular service to the railway, as they might be called away at any time. Mr S. K. Siddells, replying, stated that similar conditions applied to Air \\ ills, who was, furthermore, running a service from Pahiatua to Palmerston North in direct competition with the railway. It was suggested that Mr Wills’s present license be revoked, cincl altered to permit both parties to operate in alternate weeks and eliminate unprofitable running. An application was made by Mr \\ ills for a minor variation of his time-table. This was granted, and Messrs Jones and Yewen were granted a single license (one car) for a continuous service.
