A NEW WATER SUPPLY.

INVESTIGATIONS PROCEEDING MEDICAL OFFICER'S REPORT. The monthly meeting of the Pahiatna Borough Council was held last evening. There were present His Worship the Mayor (Mr J. D. Wilson), Ors. A. Ross, P. Tulloch, W. T. Brown, F. Britland, P. R. Boagey. 'J. Murphy, and J. O. Davidson. Leave of absence was granted Crs. A. D. Donald and W. H. Murch. The Medical Officer of Health (Dr. W. B. Mercer) wrote: “I have had an interview with Mr Toogood, the engineer, on the 25th inst, and after discussion it was agreed that triples of river water should be taken from the Miangatainoka at Hukanui, and from the Mangahao at two different sites, and also from the springs in the Borough. “I propose, therefore, to come to Pahiatua with Senior Inspector Gardiner on Monday next, March 3rd, and collect these samples. It will be necessary to have the springs in use and any other springs that might be utilised, opened up, so that there will be no delay in collecting samples.” In reference to the above the engineer, Mr Toogood, wrote: ‘‘l have had an interview with Dr. Mercer, District Medical Health Officer, with regard to the question of water supply. ‘The Malcakahi Stream is condemned owing to its close proximity to Eketalmna. The other rivers are considered possible, but there are objections to their use for domestic water. “The springs in the Borough will be tested, and in this connection, if it is not already done it is necessary to have them properly and completely cleaned at once, so that they will be running quite clear when the samples are taken. “Dr. Mercer and his Chief Inspector propose to visit Pahiatua next week to take samples and have a look over the watersheds of the two rivers proposed.” Dr. Mercer further reported: “I may briefly say that the Mangatainoka and Mnkakahi Rivers are not likely to be safe sources for a water supply. Tl>e Mnkakahi runs right through Eketahuna, and receives surface washings and drainage from the streets and houses of that town, and the Mangata noka, of course, receives the water of the Makakahi. 1 cannot speak definitely about the Mangahao. but I fear this river is not much better as a source of supply at the site Mr Toogood selects. Ittfkould probably be quite safe a further un stream. Mr Toogood refers to chlorination or other artificial nur fication method of treating a suspicious supply. I would however, be strongly opposed to any proposed new supply which might require artificial purification to make it safe for a town-water supply.” The Mayor sa d that the engineer’s report had not vet come to hand and iint’l it did tile Council could do nothing. Ci. A. Ross asked when the report would be ready, remarking that the water pressure was very low, at present and tlie Fire Board was becoming anxious. The Mayor said it should be ready soon. PARKING CARS AT NIGHT. Cr. \Y. T. Brown made the suggestion that the parking areas round the squares be lighted similar to Palmerston North. A light at each end of the squares would obviate the necessity of the car-owner leaving his lights on all the time. Perhaps a suitable light could be attached to an arm extended from the telegraph pole, it would be a great acquisition to motorists. Cr. J. ('. Davidson considered the idea a good one for the special parking area in Tui Street. With regard to the garden sgunres he asked if it was necessarv at all to have additional light. . Could net the :.rt:-a, he declared a parking area at night where ear lights are unnecessary? Cr. J. Murphy said that that was a mat er for police consent. ""ne Town Clerk x.ud that it "i-; gr-vnee 1 by a by-law in Palmerston North, He considered there was more iicnt now in the streets of Panic' ia than there was in Palmerston North. Tfbss said that the lettering on the War Memorial was gettmg pretty well obliterated The memorial fund war; well in credit, and the lettering should be re-gilded. Cr J. O. Davidson said that the Kenm Bayne Memorial could also do with a “brush-up.” The Mavor remarked that the latter Memorial was not under the jurisd'etion of the Council. It was decided that the Town Clerk obtain prices for re-gilding all the letter's on the War Memorial in the Central Garden Square. CARNIVAL PARK RATE. The Clerk reported on the recent poll for the Carnival Park rate when 46 favoured the proposal, 16 opposed it, and there was one informal vote The M ayor said that there was a very small poll in both County and Borough and it seemed that the big majority were in favour of the proposal. The consent of the ratepayers had been obtained, so it now remained for the Council, if it desired, to strike a rate up to £l5O.
