THE SIGHTS OF THE DISTRICT

SOME EXCELLENT VIEWS. “Ad Summa,” who is much impressed with the scenic beauties of this part, writes as follows: “I wonder if many people living in Pahiatua know much 0 f the sights of this district. A really beautiful spot is the road going up the hill at the ‘Hall settlement.’ a lovely view being obtained, with clumps of mamaku and ferns. There is an excellent approach, the distance being only about three miles to th e top from t:he road after crossing the Bn I lance bridge from the Woodville side. The gorge is a great asset to Woodville, it being frequented by many people of that town during the summer months. The outings are most enjoyable. J have taken Pahiatua people up the hill and they have been astonished that there is such a beauty spot in the neighbourhood. They had never heard of it.

“The recreation ground at the gorge is well laid out. The bush is very fine, and the bathing in the Manawatu is splendid for good swimmers, the water being so soft and warm, and the bathing hole just Al. It is an eye-opener, a trip up the hill. A lovely outing can be made from Pahiatua to Woodville. tlienc e to the gorge, over the bridge to the left, then up the hill to the right and return by Ballance joining the Palmerston North—Pahiatua track, or vice versa. There is an excellent camping ground in the domain to the left after crossimr the Ballance bridge from the Woodville side, and beautiful bush with pleasant paths. Another trip is up Mt. Whariti. There is a good motor road for half th e way and a magnificent view can he obtained of the surrounding country. The climb is a comparatively easy one. Then we must not forget our beautiful Carnival Park which evokes great admiration from visitors, yet I am afraid there are many people living here who are not conversant with this resort —one of nature’s choicestspots. The park possesses a charm all its own.”
