DEATH OF OLD RESIDENT
MR ALBERT MARTIN. The deatli occurred at 9.30 o’clock this morning of Air Albert Martin, a well-known and highly respected resident of Pahiatua. The deceased gentleman, who was aged 89 years, was a colonist of 74 years standing, having landed in Wellington by the ship “Duke of Portland.” He settled in Wellington, and subsequently lived in Masterton, Mangaone, and ultimately Pahiatua, arriving here 30 years ago. He had been failing rapidly for some time past. The late Air Martin was af one time secretary of Court Bowen Lodge (Foresters’ Order), 44’ellington, and oil relinquishing the position, was presented with a very fine medal, which h e greatly prized. The deceased was one of the small remaining band of sturdy pioneers and for many years, lie whs a wellknown figure in th e town. He was for a long time engaged in farming till he retired to Pahiatua many yea rs ago.
As an instance of liis grit, several years ago he startled the crowd at tlie local swimming carnival by winning the 50 yards dash in great style. A sketch of the late MiMartin’s varied experiences as a very old colonist was published in the Herald some time ago. Fie leaves a widow and family of several sons and daughters, comprising: Airs A. F. Col Iyer (Feilding), Mrs E. L. Darley (Reinueia), Mrs F. ~C. Sed-c-ole (Te Rehunga), Mrs R. AlcGovern (Rangitumau, Masterton), Mrs A. Gardiner (Pahiatua), Alessrs E. C. A. Martin (44 7 aharoa, 4\"flikato), ,7. H. (44’a I ton. Waikato). F. A. (Puketonia, Bay of Islands), J. A. (4\’ellington), H. A. (Wnipukurau), \ . 44’. (Ohinepanae, Te Puke). The funeral will take place on Wednesday. Members of the Forester’s lodge are invited to attend in regalia, assembling first at the lodgeroom at 10.20 a.m.
