MUNICIPAL ELECTIONS

DEPUTATION TO MR. TiNNEY ASKED TO BE NOMINATED. On Wednesday morning, a number of prominent business people and residents of the town waited upon Mr S. T. Tinney to urge upon turn to reconsider his decision not to stand again for municipal honours. The- Mayor (Mr J. D. C. Crewe) expressed the Council’s appreciation at the past services of Mr Tinney, lauding his usefulness as such and as chairman of the library committee. Mr Tinney had at all times taken a keen interest in local affairs, and was certainly too good a man to lose. The fact that at the last two elections, lie was one of the two who headed the poll showed that the ratepayers fully appreciated his efforts on their behalf. Cr P. Tulloch supported the Mayor, and Messrs A. Vaughan, F. W. Groves and G. H. Hodd spoke in a similar strain, urging upon Mr Tinney to offer himself again for nomination.

Mr T inney thanked the deputation for the flattering sentiments expressed. He said he would consider their request and give the Mayor his answer in a tew days’ time.

Apologies were received for the absence of a number of others in sympathy with the deputation.
