RINGING THE CHANCES
A PALMERSTON CASE. Electric Telegraph-—Press Association PALMERSTON N., April y. “I don’t remember anything about it.” pleaded Leo Drury, a young man wlio was charged before Mr J. L. Stout, S.M., at the Magistrate's Court yesterday with attempting, by means of a trick, to obtain 9s from H. W. Scott and also with the theft of a pot of vanishing cream. Evidence was given by H. W. Scott tIi.VL the accused came into his chemist's shop on Saturday evening and after purchasing a tube oi tooth paste attempted the old trick of ringing the changes. Witness told him there was nothing doing. When searched at the Police Station the vanishing cream was found in the accused’s possession, and he could not say where he obtained it. Mr Scott, in the course of his evidence, stated that a not of cream similar to that found on Drury was missing from his shop, but he could no. identify the pot as being actually his, as every chemist sold the same line
His Worship held that there was not sufficient evidence to prove that the cream had been stolen, and dismissed the charge. Eor attempting to defraud, however, Drury was sentenced to one month’s imprisonment. The police produced the accused's record, which showed two previous convictions for theft some years ago.
