TRAFFICAT NGAWAPURUA BRIDGE
COUNTV MOTOR LORRY BARRED With refereee to the County Council's letter of October last in regard t tehoggvv :.HOa —— ?—? —? to the action‘of the Railway Department in declining to allow the Council's motor lorry loaded with metal to cross the Ngawaparua Bridge the following letter has been received from the Prime Minister:— “1 have the honour to (inform you that the enquiries made go to show that the weight of the particular lorry referred to was tons and not Ti as stated. The load limit is fixed by by-law, and even if ,the maximum was 7.) tons it could not he accepted for conveyance over the bridge. “With rcsjK'et to the statement that the bridge is Ix'ing continuously used by private owners of motor lorries to transport furniture and other goods, the loads of which are often in excess of the weight your Councir propost's to carry, I desire to point out that the information furnished your Council in this connection must have been given under a misapprehension as none of the officers of the Department- or the Bridge-keeper have any knowledge of such loads. Largo loads of furniture have at times crossed the bridge, but the weights of such loads were well within the j-e----gulatioii limit. While desirous of assisting your Council as far as possible, I regret I cannot agree to the provisions being departed from under any rirc.um.sta net's. At the monthly meeting to-day, the letter was read, when the Chairman stated that nothing more could be done >'n the matter. It was. a great pity, he said, for the metal got from, the river was first-class, anti there was no metal like it in 'the other t i vers.
