LAND SETTLEMENT
THE HOMESTEAD SYSTEM
PROBABLE INAUGURATION IN AUCKLAND DISTRICT. THE MINISTER’S VISIT. Electric Telegraph—Press Association Auckland January 19. The inauguration of land settlement, under the homestead system, not far north of Auckland, is an early possibility. The Minister for Lands (the Hon. D. H. Guthrie) paid a visit of inspection to a block of 14,000 acres between Swanson and Helensville, which lias been marked down as a likely area fo l'the purpose, and as a result of tlie inspection the Minister is satisfied that the land; is well adapted for settlement on the new system. It is practically certain that, as soon as the preliminaries have been completed a start will be made with this block, and the first experiment under the new system will be inaugurated. The land has been subdivided but the areas into which it has been cut are not altogether suitable for tho purpose. Another subdivision scheme will, therefore, be devised. This and other matters will have to bo considered by tlio Minister and •officials of the Lands Department, but once this business has been completed, the present intention is to pro- j secute the scheme vigorously. It ia | also hoped that a similar scheme will : bo inaugurated before long in the South Auckland district.
