DROWNED IN BREAKERS
MATRON’S PLUCKY ATTEMPTS AT RESCUE.
A sad drowning accident, occurred at Te Muri Bay, near Waiwera, whjere the children from the Leslie Presbyterian Oi*phanage are in camp, the victim being Victor Cartier, aged 12 years. A number of the boys and girls were walking along (the beach | in. bathing costume to the swimming ; place, in company with the swimming place, in company with the matron, Miss A. Wright, and the, as-sistant-matron, Miss Norrie, and though the children had strict instructions not to go on or near the rocks, it is supposed the hoy left the Others to look lor jelly fish in the shallow water near the rocks, for he suddenly called out to the matron. She found ho was in difficulties, having been swept off his feet by the back-wash from 'the breakers. The matron went to the boy’s assistance the water being up to her waist. Sho caught bold of the hoy. Alhough swept off lnw feet, Miss Wright held the lad till she herself was exhausted, when lie was washed from her grip and sank. Mr A. M. Woods, who chanced to be in the vicinity, attempted to go to their assistance from the, beaeli but was prevented by the breakers from reaching them. Mrs Tics, another member of the staff, and an expert swimmer, then went to Miss Wright’s assisv mice, and, with the aid of a rope thrown from the beach succeeded in rescuing her. The boy’s body was recovered on Sunday afternoon.
