I Excited demonstrations took place in the Vienna streets, as the result ot the publication of the details of the Austrian defeat. ! Crowds, including many women, shouted “Bread or peace I” Masses of strikers became involved in a serious fight, in which civilians 1 and police were wounded. It is sig- : nificant the military were not called | out. the authorities apparently doubting their loyalty. Washington, Last Night. I State Department advices confirm j the reports that the conditions in j Vienna have reached a most critical ! stage owing to the shortage of food I and the defeat of the Austrian forces I on the Piave front. These factors have produced a serious political situation. The masses are attributing their present sufferings to the fact that peace has not been nego tiated. Amsterdam, Last Night. I Premier Weckerle, speaking in the i Hungarian Chamber of Deputies, disclosed a serious situation at Budapest. 'He admitted that most of the facI tories had ceased working and the I newspapers were not appearing. Weckerle urged the necessity for ! less severe military supervision of the factories. ITALIAN AND AUSTRIAN CLAIMS London, Last Night. An Italian official message states: We took 500 prisoners during an operation extending the bridgehead at Caposile on the 25th. An Austrian official message claims : The Italians unsuccessfully attempted to capture Colderosso, and endeavoured to cross in boats near Ponte di Piave, which we destroyed.
