FRENCH CARRY OUT RAIDS. AIRMEN VERY ACTIVE. London, Last Night. A French communique reports: There are fairly lively artillery actions south of the Aisne and in the region of Woevre. We earth'd out three raids in the Vosges. Sir Douglas Haig's aviation report states : We brought down seven Herman machines and drove others down uncontrollable. Two British machines are missing. Our day bombers droj>ped 14$ tons of bombs on railway sta. tions, dumps, transports and billets, also on the Bruges docks. Our night bombers dropped 16 tons of bombs on various targets. All our machines returned. GERMANY’S NEXT EFFORT. London, Last Night. General Maurice, writing in the “Daily Chronicle,’’ says that the importance of Germany’s next effort has increased fx-cause a failure, following upon the Austrian defeat, would have the most disastrous consequences. Germany’s policy has been to conclude each year's campaign with a showy success. Therefore the Germans would bo all the more careful in the next attack on the West front. The present pause meant that the tnxips behind the lines arc not yet sufficiently trained.
