LAWN TENNIS AT SCARBOROUGH.

OPENING OF NEW COURT.

It is not generally known that the suburb of Scarborough (or Alangamutu), situated near the railway station, possesses a pubiic Domain, the area of which i 6 about twelve acres. Tbe Domain is only a few minutes’, walk from the railway station, and on it ar e plantations and a nice clump of Native bush. It is rather a pleasant spot. Last year the Scarborough Domain Board had a pavilion erected, and recently an asphalt tennis court has been laid down, at a cost of £36. • The official opening of the latter took Saturday afternoon in warm , and in the presence of a fair n itaer of* the residents.

The Patron of the newlylformed Tennis Club (Air T. P. Gird wood), who performed the formal opening ceremony, said that when he first knew the locality, it was the hone' of the Afaori hens and wild pigs, and it took one all their time tp g r through the dense bush let alone knock it down. To see the land in its improved state was something .surprising. He believed that it eoujd be made to «*qual any other Domain in the Dominion. By exhibiting energy, pluck and determination, he hoped they would continue to improve the ground and make it an ornament to the district. It was over sixty years since he had handled a tennis racquet He hoped that many of the young people would enjoy themselves on the court, and that by taking an interest in the Domain, it would be an attractive and popular resort fdr generations to eome. ( Applause). Mr Girdwood then amid further applause sent the first hall across the court.

Several enjoyable g.jmes were played by a number of those present.Afternoon tea was dispensed by the ladies.

The Tennis Club has now a membership of thirty-one. The President is Air J. Dean, and Aliss Burge is secretary. The members of the committee comprise Airs Dean, Airs Brechin, Airs Brigans, Aliss Avery, and Alessrs A .Keats and Olliver.

The Scarborough Domain Board consists of Messrs G. G. Taylor (chairman and treasurer), T. P. Girdwood, A. AlcFarlane, and D. O’Brien. Another member has to be appointed to fill a vacancy on the Board.
