POISONOUS GAS IN A WELL

Electric Teleerapn—Press Association. Copyright. Timaru. Last Night. A double fatality occurred this morning on a farm near Otaio. Two Timaru men, brothers in law, named Vincent and Johnson, were sinking a well on Air A. Nichols’s farm. They had got down 160 feet. This morning one went down, and, giving no signal, his mate also went to see what was wrong. He also failel to signal A third man named Noble was let down, hut signalled to be pulled up, and lie was brought up unconscious. Some precautions were then taken to clear out the gas, and Noble was let down again, but was again overcome. A fireman’s smoke helmet was sent for from Timaru, and, wearing this. Noble descended, and both bodies were brought up during the afternoon. Vincent was married and left two children; Johnston was single.
