QUEEN OF ALLIES' CARNIVAL. FIVE CANDIDATES. A largely attended meeting of • the Queen of the Allies’ Carnival Committee wa* held on Saturday afternoon. Mr T. Hodgins presided. Five candidates had been nominated for the Queen of the Allies’ Carnival, and the draw for the countries they are to represent resulted as follows: —Miss McLeod, Russia j Miss Lawson, Italy ; Miss Tew, Belgium ; Miss May, Japan; Mrs Johansen, France.
Messrs G. H. Smith and H. Hart explained the procedure in connection with the Motor Car Art Union. The committee of the latter has subscribed £IOO for the purchase of Queen votes. To thp committee of any candidate selling the most car tickets from to-day, the 19th ihst., np to 10 p.m. on the 14th the committee will present 24.000 Queen votes. Mr Smith stated that the votes were a penny each, and from time to time tile order of candidates would be published by a supervising committee of four, but the supervising committee would not disclose the actual rotes of the candidates.
A list of persons who have donated various articles for the Carnival was read. Some of the gifts had been allocated for the support of certain candidates. Mr Hodd suggested an! Art Union for the unallotted gifts, and a motion to that effect was. after considerable discussion, carried. It was also resolved, that the price of the Art Union tickets should be Is, entitling the holder to twelve Queen, of the Carnival votes. It was decided that the treasurer, and the Carnival Committee arrange with the secretary for the issue of scrip and voting coupons. The chairman and Mr Smith explained that owing to a misunderstanding. Mr MeSherry. chairman of the Carnival Committee, had resigned his position.. He had previously sent in a protest against £IOO worth of votes being given by the Motor Car Committee to any partieu'ar candidate’s committee, as he was of c pinion that it would give the candidate securing £IOO worth of votes too big a lead. The protest had been sent in on Wednesday to the executive, but receiving no.reply he had since tendered lus resignation. The meeting unanimously resolved, that it regretted the resignation, and that Mr MeSherry be requesed to withdraw it.
