MAKURI POST OFFICE.
EXTENSION OF HOURS. A correspondejit writes: "In your ;s.vu}/ of the 4th inst. re extended hours for ‘delivery of mails’ between 7 and 8 p.m., it was suggested that if the concession was made it would be necessary to make some alteration in the day service to recompense the post-mistress for the evening work, and that perhaps the office might tie opened an hour later in the morning (10 a.m.) Surely it would Ire a poor exchange for the public to lose an hour in the morning when unv class of business can he done for an hour in the evening for delivery of letters. It is not long since the office was closed on Wednesday afternoons, and this arrangement was proved unsatisfactory. Since then the business has increased considerably, the number of siilr-crib-ers to the telephone having trebled, and now numbering just on twenty. The closing of the office during the day is not only inconvenient to the •settlers hut also to the outside public, who wish to communicate with Makiiri per telephone. If it is just a. matter of mails only why not recommend the settlers interested to rent a letter-box. and they can get their mail anytime up to 10 p.m. without detriment to any one. or adding to the hours of the postmistress.”
